Família muito antiga e muito nobre, chamada Polizzi, Polizi ou Polizio, que chegaram na Itália após os reis aragoneses, que desempenharam diferentes papéis político-militares durante o domínio aragonês da Sicília. Segundo o genealogista Philadelphus Mugnos, do século XVII, o progenitor da família seria Simone / Ximenio, que "pelos serviços militares do rei Federico III recebeu o feudo do Burraiti em Girgenti" (Agrigento). Isso é confirmado pelo ato da Chancelaria do Reino da Sicília de 14 de fevereiro de 1375: Frederico IV da Sicília concedeu o feudo burraitiano, colocado no Val di Agrigento no feudo Grancifuni, Fabaria e Misilini, a Simone, falecido, sem filhos legítimos, Manfredi Calcia, filho e herdeiro do soldado Manfredi Calcia. Segundo outros autores, no entanto, o progenitor da família teria sido Philip, prefeito da casa do rei Martin e castelão de Castrogiovanni em 1398.
