Famiglia originaria da Voltri sulla Riviera ligure, è ricordata nei documenti fino dal secolo XVI. I suoi rami si trasferirono a Lucca ed a Genova, nella quale città si chiamò Polleri, rendendosi benemerita con Francesco Giuseppe, al quale oggi è intitolata una via cittadina per avere lasciato ad Opere Pie il suo cospicuo patrimonio. Andrea Maria, di Antonio, di Giovanni Battista, nel 1665 si trasferì a Lucca, per dare maggiore incremento alla industria della fabbricazione della carta, che presso le famiglie del patriziato della Repubblica andava soppiantando quella già in decadenza della seta. Fu merito della famiglia di lui, che comprò la cartiera di Piegaio, ed altre ne costruì a Vorno e a Villabasilica, di avere condotta tale arte, nota a Lucca dai primi anni del secolo XV, al grado di perfezione che rese celebri e ricercate le stamperie lucchesi anche per la bellezza della carta adoperata.
