La famiglia Polo originaria da Sebenico, e stabilitasi a Venezia nel 1033 (o Polli, De Pol, Polo, Zepolli derivati dal nome Paolo), è assai antica, ma le memorie nei bassi tempi non sono numerose. Si conoscono le vicende e le imprese commerciali dei viaggiatori veneziani, testé illustrate nell'opera sapiente del professore cav. uff. Giovanni Orlandini, qualche altra notizia dimostra che dopo i Polo di Venezia e precisamente nel 1204, il cardinale Ottaviano vescovo di Ostia, fu mediatore della pace tra Uberto Visconti podestà di Bologna e i modenesi, e a Bologna conservasi uno stemma in data 1598 del canonico e dott. di leggi Francesco. Nell'Emilia i Polo furono cittadini stimati; appartennero alla Università di Ferrara, nella quale città di stabilì il conte Giovanni Battista di Treviso, e si ricorda assai benevolmente la contessa Antropa Polo-Trotti (1865). I membri della famiglia, patrizi di Modena, sono menzionati nell'Elenco della Nobiltà Italiana
