Secondo una remota tradizione, sarebbero venuti dalla Francia al Castello di Nimis (Friuli) furona antichi cittadini di Udine, patrizi di Gradisca e servirono la Repubblica Veneta nel 1460, sotto Bartolomeo da Bergamo. Domenico C. il 25 settembre 1504 ebbe una investitura feudale nei pressi di Gradisca. L'imperatore Massimiliano insigní i Comelli della Nobiltá equestre del S. R. I. per meriti di guerra e di lettere, nobiltá confermata poi dal Decreto 12 gennaio 1660 dall'Imperatore Leopoldo che aggiunse al casato dei C. il predicato di Stuckenfeld. Stanislao II, Re di Polonia, creó conte Domenico, di Carlo Francesco, suo Ciambellano alla Corte di Varsavia e Cavaliere di Malta nella seconda metá del secolo XVII. Da Nimis alcuni passarono a Gradisca ed altri a Chioggia e poi a Venezia al cui ramo appartengono gli attuali C., discendenti da Vincenzo, di Domenico, nato 10 agosto 1703, iscritti con R. D. 12 febbraio 1899 e
