Capostipite di questa famiglia fu un Pompeo, marito di Alidoni Alessi, al tempo che dominava in Verona Antonio della Scala. Giovanni, suo nipote nel 1474 ottenne dalla Veneta Repubblica conferma di privilegio, immunità ed esenzione a favore della sua casa e dei coloni d'Illasi e sue pertinenze. Nel 1404 Antonio fu dal carrarese posto al comando della Porta di S. Spirito; Giovanni venne eletto comandante dei forti di Verona nel 1438, e Bartolomeo nel 1509 fu vice-podestà in patria. Girolamo, comandante dei balestrieri, avendo fatto prigioniero il Gonzaga marchese di Mantova e generale delle truppe imperiali, ebbe per sé e per il fratello Tommaso dalla Repubblica di Venezia nel 1590 il titolo di conte d'Illasi con piena giurisdizione. Nel 1410 i Pompei vennero aggregati al nobile Consiglio di Verona, e molti di essi sostennero le principali cariche del Comune. Dall'Imperatore Carlo V fu loro conferita la cittadinanza di Milano,
