Familia de origen italiano, conocida en Bolonia desde Pietro di Torello, cónsul 1142. Después de mudarse a Polonia en 1569, la adquirió por herencia (tras el matrimonio del conde Giuseppe Salinguerra Torelli (1612-1650) de Montechiarugolo (Parma), con Sofía, la única hija de un Adalberto, de la familia Sreniawa) el señorío de Poniatow y asumió el apellido actual alrededor de 1650. El nieto ex hijo del mencionado Giuseppe Torelli, Stanislaus I (1677-1762), de Dereczyn en Lituania, acompañó al rey Carlos XII de Suecia en todas sus expediciones militares y, después de su muerte, se sometió a Federico Augusto II de Sajonia, rey de Polonia, y fue el voivod de Masovia desde 1731 y desde 1752 el castillo de Cracovia. De él nacieron: a) Casimir (1721-1800), hecho "príncipe" por su segundo hermano, rey de Polonia. b) Stanislaus Augustus II (1732-1798), de Wolczyn, quien fue amado por la zarina Catalina de Rusia y
