Famiglia di antica e nobile tradizione, che trae il proprio nome dal castello omonimo, oltre il Giogo, presso Gavi, di cui erano signori. Corrado Pontalti vendette la sua parte di signoria al Comune di Genova, 1279. Guglielmo Pontalti capitano di galera contro i Pisani, 1291; e due anni avanti fabbricò la prima campana che fu posta sulla Torre di Palazzo. Paolo Pontalti fu ambasciatore al Papa, nel 1340; al re di Francia 1342. Leonardo, figlio di detto Paolo, console di Caffa, 1357; ambasciatore al re d'Aragona, 1359; comandante delle galee genovesi in servigio dell'imperatore di Costantinopoli, 1362, dal quale riceve in dono la celebre Imagine Edessena (S. Sudario); ambasciatore a Torino, per la pace con Venezia, conclusa a mediazione del Conte Verde, 1381; eletto doge 1383, muore in dignità l'anno appresso, legando la detta Immagine alla chiesa di S. Bartolomeo degli Armeni, dove tuttora si custodisce in grande venerazione. Paolo
