La famiglia è oriunda di Castelnovo di Garfagnana, ove ebbe, prima di trasferirsi a Reggio, parecchi personaggi che si distinsero nelle armi, nelle cariche ecclesiastiche, nelle pubbliche cariche e nelle professioni liberali: Pellegrino fu capitano a Bagnacavallo dal 1554 al 1562; Pompeo fu notaio dal 1592 al 1595; Jacopo fu dottore dal 1590 al 1602. Nel 1613 un Nicolò, nato a Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, fu capitano e morì in uno scontro coi Lucchesi. E' ricordato nella storia della Garfagnana della Biblioteca Pacchi. Pier Paolo fu alcuni anni a Roma, poi, tornato in patria, divenne parroco e vicario for. di quella parte della Garfagnana ch'è soggetta all'Arcivescovado di Lucca. Vi morì nel 1690. Pubblicò un'opera biblica intitolata "Reflexiones Literales in V Libros Moysis" (Lucae ap. ; Marescandulum, 1689). Così ne parla il Tiraboschi nerlla biblioteca Modenese. nel 1628 Francesco fu cappuccino, e dispose un legato a favore del convento dei cappuccini.
