Ancient and illustrious Roman family, since time immemorial dedicated to the art of butchery, which over time acquired wealth and noble fiefdoms, including Vallerano which belonged to Onofrio and the de Ponziani brothers. Tradition has it that the progenitor is a Romanus Pontianus Pelliparius who died in 1325 and was buried in Sant'Angelo in Pescheria. His son Pietro was Canon of S. Quirico in 1340. A Giacomo, caporione of S. Angelo, was the head of the Roman citizens who supported the arrival of Lodovico il Bavaro who, on September 29th 1327, rejected, at the S. Sebastiano gate, some escaped Guelphs attempting to enter the city. Ceccolella Bassa de Pontiani belonged to this house, later known as Francesca in religion and venerated today on the altars with the name of Santa Francesca Romana (1384-1440). She was in fact the wife of Lorenzo de 'Ponziani, son of Andreozzo and Cecilia de' Mellini,
