È delle più antiche ed onorevoli della Garfagnana, ove possedeva il castello di Tassilico da essa venduto alla Comunità che lo abitava nel 1274. Insieme alla famiglia di Poggio, fu pure signora di Porcari da cui trasse il proprio nome. Il primo dei Porcaresi, la cui memoria sia giunta sino a noi, è un Beraldo che viveva nel 939, derivato da un Berto per cui la famiglia fu detta anche Bertinga. Pagano ed Inghirame ambedue pretori in Lucca, il primo nel 1187, e l'altro nel 1200, nel qual anno un Guelfo, della stessa famiglia, era podestà e capitano del popolo in Pisa; Paganello pretore di Pistoja nel 1219. Venuti in odio al popolo per la loro potenza e per l'uccisione di messer Guido Cattani signore di Perolla e pretore di Lucca consumata da Paganello P., il popolo lucchese, dopo averne incendiato e demolito il palazzo in Lucca, si portò a
