Cette famille est bien véritablement originaire de Bretagne où elle était établie depuis plusieurs siècles. On la retrouve à différentes époques, en divers localités et il y a eu nombreux personnages illustres de ce nom. On signale les personnages dignes de mémoire: Guéthénoc, comte de cette maison, marié à Alarun de Cornouaille, mort en 1046; Josselin, fils des précédents, croisé en 1096; Mainguy, évêque de Vannes en 1082. La branche aînée fondue au XII siècle dans la maison de Fougères, d'où le comté de cette maison a passé successivement aux Lusignan, aux Valois de la maison de France, aux Clisson et aux Rohan. Une branche cadette a pour auteur Alain, fils Geoffroi, vivant en 1164, tige des seigneurs de la Zouche, établis en Angleterre. On remarque (dès le XIIIème siècle) des alliances importantes avec des familles nobles en Bretagne et autres régions françaises.
