Il capostipite di questa illustre famiglia oriunda da Lentate, è un Beltramolo, vivente nel 1348, il quale fu padre di Stefano, consigliere dell'imperatore Carlo IV, che con privilegio dato a Modena il 27 agosto 1368 lo creò conte palatino con tutti i suoi discendenti maschi. Questo Stefanolo fece edificare la chiesa di S. Stefano di Lentate e fu del Consiglio Segreto di Gian Galeazzo Visconti, il quale lo investì del feudo di Pollenzo. I figli di lui, Antonio, Giovanni e Galeazzo, il 16 marzo 1385 furono da Gian Galeazzo Visconti investiti del feudo della Valtrebbia e pertinenze, già appartenuto ad Azzone e Federico Malaspina ed eretto in marchesato, ottennero poi da Venceslao re dei Romani la conferma di detta investitura con privilegio dato a Norimberga il 18 agosto 1387. Il predetto Antonio fu uno dei personaggi più importanti alla corte di Gian Galeazzo Visconti, del quale nel 1398 tenne alla
