Antica ed assai nobile prosapia bavarese, con residenza in Augusta, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi anche in Austria ove ha ricevuto il fregio nobiliare in data 8 maggio 1570 ed il titolo di Barone il 12 novembre 1764. Come detto la culla di questa casata fu la Bavaria. In Augusta i membri di questa casata furono storicamente i guardiani della città e ne custodivano le chiavi. Il cognome della famiglia deriva infatti dal latino "porta" e le tre chiavi nello stemma della famiglia sono un ricordo di questo antico ruolo. Si ha memoria di un Johannes Portner (1323) e di un Heinrich Portner (1324), entrambi custodi della città. Dal calare del XIII secolo, la famiglia si è andato sempre più affermando, raggiungendo una posizione politica di primo piano nella prima metà del XIV secolo. Inquartato; nel 1° e 4° d'oro, a due branche d'orso addossate di nero, strappate di rosso, con le unghie verso il capo; nel 2° e 3° di rosso, a tre chiavi d'argento posate in fascia, l'una su l'altra, con gli ingegni verso la punta. Sul tutto uno scudetto d'azzurro, ad una torre d'argento aperta del campo. Tre elmi coronati. Cimieri: 1° un volo rivolto all'antica con la prima ala alle armi del 1° quarto, la seconda di nero, svolazzi d'oro e di nero; 2° la torre tra due proboscidi d'azzurro; svolazzi d'argento e d'azzurro; 3° un volo all'antica, la prima ala di rosso con le chiavi del 2° quarto attraversanti, la seconda ala d'argento; svolazzi d'argento e di rosso.
