Famiglia bresciana d'antichissima nobiltà. Sembra che prima del sec. XIII si chiamasse Posculi, così come vorrebbersi far parlare lo stemma in un linguaggio mezzo latino e mezzo francese, ma che poi un ramo provenisse dal castello di Cazzago, sulle colline ad occidente di Brescia e ne prendesse il nome, anche per distinguersi dagli altri di parte ghibellina. Il primo ad apparire con tale denominazione è Ugo, vivente intorno al 1200, padre di Rodolfo che appare in un atto del 1278 e che forse è quel fratello di Bertolino che per un certo tempo fu a capo dei ghibellini bresciani (1268). Dalla moglie Antoniola Poncarali, Rodolfo ebbe: Domofollo, Console di Brescia, dal quale nacque un figlio omonimo che fu padre di Gelmo (Guglielmo). A questo punto, prima metà del secolo XIV, la famiglia si scinde in due rami principali che poi a loro volta si divisero parecchie volte riducendosi poi soltanto
