Familia de origen español que anteriormente se llamaba Mexia o Mesia. En el "Nobiliario di Spagna", Mexia es llamada una de las familias más nobles del Reino de Galicia. La noble familia Prado se extinguió en el Mesías que agregó el apellido y enmarcó las armas. Una rama de la familia Serra, patricio napolitano del Seggio di Porto, Príncipes de Carovigno, murió en Giovan Battista sin herederos. Recibido en la Soberana Orden Militar de Malta, anteriormente en 1789 en la persona del Caballero Rodrigo, después de haber hecho "la Pruova" por Don Ernando, la primera jamba de 1585. La familia fue adscrita al Registro de los Caballeros de Malta, de justicia en 1801 con Giovanni Battista, y posteriormente el 22 de agosto de 1853. A Giovanni Battista, con Real Decreto 7 de abril de 1856, se le reconoció el título de Príncipe de Carovigno. Está inscrito en la Lista Oficial
