Da un'antica cronaca esistente nell'archivio di famiglia sembra che essa abbia avuto origine in Francia e che da qui si sia stabilita in Italia meridionale nella Terra di Lavoro, già all'epoca dei re normanni. Da documenti del 1126 e del 1190 appare che possedette dei feudi in quella regione e da un'investitura di Ottone II del 1209 risulta che il conte Alberto Prato venne in possesso anche di feudi in Toscana. Fra gli uomini più noti di questa famiglia devesi annoverare il cardinale Niccolò, vissuto verso la metà del trecento, che ebbe parte assai importante nell'elezione di Clemente V, e Leonardo, balì dell'Ordine di Malta. Benché varie cronache affermino essere le diverse famiglie Prato discese da questo ceppo, non è stato fin'ora possibile rintracciare il filo genealogico che congiunga la famiglia Prato trentina con esso.
