Desconchece-se origem da famiíla dos Pretos, mas o que não oferece dúvidas é que o apelido provém de alcunha. Se teve princípo em Portugal na Espanha ou na Itália, não se sabe igualmente pois no reinado de D. João I vivia em Portugal um seu vassalo de nome Gonçalo Pires P., e em Castela Diogo P., que defendia o castelo de Melgaço, que seguia o partido castelhano. Pode, mesmo ser que os Pretos de Portugal nenhum parentesco tivessem com os de Castela, porque a alcunha de preto foi muito vulgar, aplicando-se às pessoas de tez escura, ainda que não fossem de sangrue negro.
