Antico casato francese, di chiara ed avita virtù, sorto dall'unione, probabilmente, per via matrimoniale, di due illustri famiglia di Vivarais e propagatosi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Purtroppo, assai frammentarie sono le notizie relative alla famiglia Prin. I testi araldici, infatti, riportano solamente l'origine in Vivarais e la conferma di nobiltà, che ebbe in data 1781. La famiglia Clary (o Clari), invece, risulta presente in Vivarais, sin dal XIII secolo. Tuttavia, essa trasse il proprio nome dalla località di "Clerey", sita a 15 km a sudest di Troyes, nell'attuale dipartimento dell'Aube. Gerenton, scudiero di Privas, vivente in Vivarais, circa nel 1240, possedeva un feudo nel mandamento di Cheylus, in seguito al suo matrimonio, nel 1308, con Pierre de Cheylus. Pierre, vice-bailo di Vivarais, sposò, nel 1410, Armandite d'Auvergne, figlia di Pierre d'Auvergne e di Andoave de Merles, di Viviers. Da tal unione, pervennero: Jean, marito di Louise
