Antica e potente famiglia di parte lambertazza, che prese parte a tutte le fazioni che, nel XIII secolo, afflissero la città di Bologna; città alla quale diede parecchi Anziani dal 1249 al 1359. Alcuni di questa famiglia dovettero esulare in Romagna, ed Uguccione di Bartolomeo Principe, nel 1298, dai Ghibellini bolognesi, fuorusciti congregati in adunanza generale ad Imola, fu eletto sindaco e procuratore, al fine di comporre le inimicizie tra il Comune di Bologna ed i suddetti fuorusciti. Non si hanno più notizie di questa famiglia dal 1359. Tuttavia sappiamo che essa risulti essere il ramo originario della famiglia Dal medico.
