La genealogia documentata di questa famiglia, e autenticata dalla Consulta Araldica, risale a Giovanni Prinetti, membro del Consiglio di Riviera d'Orta e console di Maisino nel 1492, dal discese Nicolao, pure console di Miasino, che morendo senza figli nel 1573 istituita suo erede Giulio, di Domenico Castelletti della nobile famiglia patrizia milanese (nominata nel 1277 nella matricola di ottone Visconti), il quale ne assunse il casato conservando però lo stemma avito. I Prinetti si trasferirono in Milano al principio del sec. XVIII. Giulio, di Ignazio, dal suo matrimonio con la nob. Giovanna Ciani, ebbe quattro figli Ignazio (n. 1814, dec. 1867), commendatore mauriziano, senatore del Regno, governatore di Novara, del 1859, che nello stesso anno sposò Anna Sala Esengrini, che gli generò Giovanni Emanuele, n. a Milano 8 nov. 1859, inviato straordinario e ministro plenipotenziario onorario ufficiale mauriziano, che con R. D. di motu proprio di S. M. Umberto I
