Della famiglia si hanno notizie dal 1478 con un Bartolomeo Prina di Sabbione (Villa del Comune di Reggio), vivente in quell'anno. Un Domenico, di Sante, vivente nel 1650 ed era negoziante. Antonio era banchiere nel 1639 e può considerarsi capostipite. Ebbe in moglie una Vittoria di cui non si conosce il cognome, e ne ebbe sette figli, fra i quali Michele, che fu dottore collegiato nel 1637, e Ambrogio, che sposò Barbara Franchi e continuò la famiglia. Egli ebbe tre sole femmine di cui due, Isabella e Matilde, sposarono rispettivamente il conte Giovanni ed il conte Giacomo Prini di Verona, che pare fossero parenti loro. Da Giacomo (dec. già nel 1680) e Matilde, continuò il ramo diretto della famiglia col figlio Bernardo, che sposò Lodovico Castelvetri di Modena, sorella del vescovo di Reggio, ma alla Corte di Modena; da cui Giacomo, gentiluomo alla Corte di Modena, che sposò Laura del
