Famiglia di Carignano, la cui origine risale a tempi antichissimi, per quanto le prime generazioni siano note solo nel secolo XIII. Ma il trovarsi in alto stato, già in tale epoca, dimostra con sicurezza come la grande distinzione della famiglia si datasse da tempi remoti. Si volle riallacciarla ai signori di Borgaro, di cui costituirebbe un ramo, ma trattasi di una semplice ipotesi mancante di prova. Estese questa famiglia la propria signoria sopra più di novanta feudi e produsse, come si esprime lo storico piemontese monsignore Agostino della Chiesa, un'infinità di uomini insigni in tutte le professioni. Tre cavalieri dell'Ordine Supremo della Santissima Annunziata stanno a dimostrare e attestano le grandi benemerenze di questa illustre famiglia.
