A destra ed a sinistra della Valle del Borbera esisteva avanti il mille una vasta regione denominata Pobleto (pioppeto) che dette il nome alla valle, diventata poi Valle di Rati, per i castelli e luoghi posseduti dai Rati Opizzoni, ed ora Val Borbara. Un borgo sulla destra del torrente a metà valle era feudo d'un vassallo del vescovo di Tortona, un Aimerico da cui la designazione del luogo: Borgo degli Aimerici che mutò via via in Pobbieto, Pobleto, Puybleto l'attuale Borghetto; Publeto ed anche Pobleto, fu quindi il predicato usato dai signori del luogo che assunsero poi come cognome. Si ha notizia di un Ido de P. che nel 1142 donò ogni suo avere all'Ospedale della Carità di Tortona che vuolsi fondato dal vescovo S. Innocenzo nei primi decenni del trecento; nell'atto dell'Agosto 1144 relativo alla donazione di Montalto al comune di Genova è teste Bonaventura di Pobleto; Aimerico figlio
