La famiglia è di origine reggiana. Giuseppe, uno dei personaggi più insigni di questa famiglia, ebbe parecchie cariche in Patria: fu "Savio di Municipalità", poi Podestà di Reggio sotto il regno Italico, indi sotto il duca di Modena, di cui divenne "Consigliere". Con lui fu ascritta la famiglia alla nobiltà di Reggio con delibera unanime della Comunità 18 gennaio 1819. Aumentò il patrimonio famigliare con quello del conte Bottoni, secondo marito di sua madre, che lo nominò erede universale. Sposò Madame Sophie de Bubaton di Lione, residente con la famiglia a Parma. Essa morì nel 1837, ed è ricordata da una lapide nella chiesa di S. Pietro in Reggio. Ebbe parecchi figli: Andrea, che sposò la N.D. Teresa Friggeri: Dott. Prof. Prospero, che sposò la c.ssa Vittoria del C.te Taddeo Rangone. Da lui nacque il cav. Francesco, che fu deputato provinciale di Reggio E., e due volte Sindaco di Scandiano,
