Antica famiglia di origine normanna, la si trova stabilita in Napoli nella seconda metà del XIII secolo nella persona di Francesco, il quale servì Carlo I d'Angiò che guidò alla vittoria nelle famose battaglie di Benevento e di Tagliacozzo, ed in benemerenza si ebbe in feudo con diploma 21 Settembre 1271 una terra nelle Puglie, che poi fu detta Pugliatti col titolo di duca, e da cui i suoi discendenti trassero il proprio cognome. Andrea, di lui figlio, fu dallo stesso re creato ammiraglio del regno. Essendosi però i P. mantenuti fedeli a Giovanna I, furono osteggiati di Carlo III di Durazzo, il quale distrusse la loro terra di Pugliatti, e privò Andrea ed altri di tal casato di ogni feudo e privilegio; perlochè fuono costretti rifugiarsi in Sicilia, dove fin dal 1302 erano passati altri della famiglia al servizio dei re aragonesi.
