Antigua familia de origen normando, se encuentra establecida en Nápoles en la segunda mitad del siglo XIII en la persona de Francisco, que sirvió a Carlos I de Anjou que condujo a la victoria en las famosas batallas de Benevento y Tagliacozzo, y por mérito tuvo en feudo con diploma el 21 de septiembre de 1271 una tierra en Puglia, que más tarde se llamó Pugliatti con el título de duque, y de donde sus descendientes tomaron su apellido.
