Luigi e Giovanni di Giacomo da Portomaggiore, oriundi dal Bolognese, si arrichirono con l'industria agricola. Giovanni ottenne la cittadinanza di Ferrara e dal duca Ercole III d'Este fu nominato suo familiare. Giovanni di Luigi, cameriere segreto di Cappa e Spada del Papa, sposò nel 1841 la marchesa Ginevra Canonici Mattei dei Duchi di Giove, e fu da Gregorio XIII insignito del titolo di Conte per ordine di primogenitura; ottenne altresì la nobiltà e il patriziato della Repubblica di San Marino. Giacomo, fratello del predetto Giovanni, fu pure nominato Conte per ordine di primogenitura. Fu costume delle più antiche famiglie, le quali dopo la caduta del Romano Imperio, in quella inondatione de' Barbari, havendo i loro cognomi, sicome gli studi, e altre cose belle smarrito e restati solo con semplici nomi, trarre di nuovo i loro cognomi, e il loro casato da' nomi proprii paterni, e de' maggiori.
