Antigua y muy noble familia de Cividale, cuyas primeras noticias se remontan a un Amedeo, que vivió en Cividale en la primera mitad del siglo XIV. Del nombre, o más bien apodo de Pup o Pupus o Puppus, con el que su hijo Giacomo jacobus Pupus fue designado qm. Amadei de Civitate, la leyenda surgió a fines del siglo XVII, aceptó también por historiadores acreditados, que los Puppi provenían de Poppi en el Casentino y que eran una rama de la famosa familia de los Condes Guidi, contagiada de ese castillo. Según esta leyenda, un Leopoldo, hijo del conde Guglielmo Guidi, expulsado de Florencia por el partido gibelino, se refugió en 1258 en Aquileia, en cuya basílica habría erigido el altar de S.
