Antichissima ed assai celebre famiglia, originaria di Cava dei Tirreni, che vuolsi derivata da un cavaliere salernitano, che al tempo di Guaimaro IV, principe di Salerno, con quaranta armati normanni, ospiti della città, di ritorno da Terra Santa, trovandosi a difesa di una delle porte, uscì contro i Saraceni, che assediavano Salerno, e li pose in rotta. Per tale merito il Cavaliere "dei Quaranta" ebbe una vasta proprietà fra Salerno e Cava de'Tirreni, dove la famiglia si stabilì e dove fondò in seguito la Chiesa dei SS. Quaranta Martiri, divenendo una delle famiglie più prestigiose di Salerno e Cava. Intorno alla loro villa sorse poi, in epoca normanna, il Casale Quaranta (sec. XII). Con l'arrivo della dinastia angioina vari rami della famiglia si trasferirono a Napoli, dove furono Patrizi dei Seggi di Forcella e di Porto.
