Antica famiglia originaria di Cava dei Tirreni, che vuolsi derivata da un cavaliere salernitano, che al tempo di Guaimaro IV, principe di Salerno, con quaranta armati normanni, ospiti della città, di ritorno da Terra Santa, trovandosi a difesa di una delle porte, uscì contro i Saraceni, che assediavano Salerno, e li pose in rotta. Da questo cavaliere pare sia derivato il nome e l'arma della famiglia. Domenico, con R. Privilegio del 1663, fu da re Filippo IV riconosciuto nella nobiltà e nel diritto di usare l'antica arma gentilizia. Ricevuta per giustizia nel S.M.Ordine di Malta, nel 1859, come quarto della famiglia Patrizi, fu ricevuta, ancora, nel 1871 con proprio cavaliere in persona di Federico, di poi commendatore di giustizia, avendo fatta la prova dal suddetto Domenico. Ebbe questa famiglia feudali possessi, e si rese illustre con alti uffici ed uomini insigni, fra i quali va ricordato Bernardino, letterato ed archeologo
