I Quaratesi, originari di Quaranta nella Potesteria del Galluzzo, vennero ad abitare in Firenze nel Borgo di S. Niccolò, ove costruirono le loro case nelle quali i Bardi trovaron salvezza in occasione dell'assedio del 1343. In seguito possedettero anche il palazzo fatto costruire dei Pazzi, su disegno del Brunelleschi, in via del Proconsolo, quello già dei Busini in piazza d'Ognissanti, decorato esternamente da Andrea Fellini, la casa che fu di Giovan Bologna in Borgo Pinti, e il palazzo Salviati al Mercatino di S. Pietro. Ricchi e reputati mercanti, furono ripetutamente chiamati a far parte della Signoria, 9 volte in qualità di Gonfalonieri di giustizia, 32 volte in qualità di Priori. Nè l'importanza della famiglia venne a scemare col Principato, contandosi ben 6 Senatori scelti da questa casa. Tra i personaggi più noti si ricordano: Sandro di Simone, che nel 1348 fu uno dei cittadini deputati sopra il pubblico Studio
