Très illustre maison de la Bretagne, d'une haute antiquité, dont les premiers auteurs connus sont: Foulques, croisé en 1190 et 1218, tué devant Damiette en 1219; Jean, chevalier dans une montre en 1380, père de Jean, chambellan du roi Charles VII qui a continué la filiation, et de quatre autres fils, tués à la bataille de Verneuil en 1424. Cette famille alliée aux Craon, la Jaille, Quélen et du Guesclin, a encore produit un chevalier de Malte en 1663; un chevalier des ordres du Roi, chevalier d'honneur de la princesse Palatine, duchesse d'Orléans en 1668; un membre admis aux honneurs de la cour en 1786; un gouverneur civil d'Ancone en 1860; un volontaire pontifical tué la même année au combat de Montana. D'après la tradition Bernard de Montmorillon avait reçu le surnom de Quatrebarbes, vers 1087, pour avoir tué le même jour en combat singulier, quatre émirs sarrasins dans une expédition de Raymond, comte de Toulouse, contre les maures d'Espagne.
