Los cronistas venecianos dan origen a esta familia campesina eracleana a partir de aquel dux Maurizio Galbaio o Galonio elegido en el 764, haciendo derivar de su descendencia familias nobles como los Querini, los Calbo y los Canal. Ciertamente esta familia participó no poco en la historia de Venecia. Heraclea era el bastión de los leales de Bizancio, mientras que en Malamocco había una tendencia a abrirse cada vez más a los francos; Maurizio contó fuertemente con Bizancio para oponerse a los objetivos del Papa en las tierras de la laguna, ya que había dejado de lado cualquier tipo de alianza con los lombardos. De hecho, obtuvo del emperador de Oriente el doble nombramiento de magister militum e ipato, lo que provocó la reacción de Desiderio.
