Famille germanique ancienne et très noble, de vertu claire et ancestrale, répandue au cours des siècles dans diverses régions d'Europe et du monde. La noblesse évidente de la famille est confirmée par sa présence dans le précieux ouvrage "L'Armorial General" de l'héraldiste et généalogiste néerlandais Johannes Rietstap, également connu sous le nom de Johannes Baptista Rietstap ou Jean-Baptiste Rietstap (en français) (Rotterdam, 12 mai , 1828 - La Haye, 24 décembre 1891). Selon ce qui nous est transmis, la maison se divise en deux branches principales. Celle des Rüppel, avec résidence dans la ville de Kassel, en Hesse, fut confirmée dans sa noblesse le 26 mai 1818 et à elle appartenait ce Wilhelm Burghard R. (1791–1860), officier évangélique et lieutenant général.
