Questa famiglia detta pure anticamente Madio e Maggio, é originaria della cittá di Tramonti presso Amalfi. Trovasi feudataria fin dal tempo dei Re Svevi, ed in quell'epoca si divise in piú rami che passarono nella cittá di Brescia, Como, Cremona, Milano e Venezia. Questa famiglia ha goduto nobiltá nella cittá di Napoli al seggio di Montagna, Tramonti, Capua, Benevento 1671, Foggia, Lucera, Andria, Catanzaro, Cosenza, Castelvetere, Montescaglioso e Massalubrense, ed in Sicilia. Ha vestito l'abito di Malta nel 1564. La famiglia Maio fu ascritta al Libro d'Oro, come appartenente al Seggio di Montagna, nei due rami dei Duchi di Sanpietro e dei Marchesi Maio Durazzo. Presso la Piazza del Vulcano in Napoli eravi un rione detto dei Maio. Sorgono monumenti di questa famiglia in Napoli nella chiesa di S. Lorenzo, in Tramonti nella chiesa dei Minori Osservanti ed in Benevento nel Duomo. Tra i membri piú illustri della famiglia ricordiamo:
