Originari di Valtorta (Bergamo) i Ragazzone diramarono nei primi secoli del mille a Brescia, nel Canton Ticino, a Venezia ed altrove. In Venezia furono nel XV sec. celebri stampatori e, nel secolo seguente, vi si stabilì Benedetto che, dalla moglie Elisabetta Ricci, ebbe quattro figli: Gerolamo, Giacomo, Placido e Agostino. Nato a Venezia nel 1537 il primogenito scelse, per vocazione, vita religiosa, studiò legge a Padova indi, consacrato, si recò a Roma ove Paolo IV, apprezzandone le doti, lo nominò suo cameriere poi, a soli 25 anni, vescovo di Naziano ed ausiliare di Famagosta nell'isola di Cipro. Il 3 e 4 dicembre 1563 chiuse l'ultima sezione del Concilio di Trento con una assai erudita dissertazione, che destò l'ammirazione dei RR. Padri. Ritornato a Famagosta, succedette al defunto titolare ed intraprese la riforma del clero secondo i canoni tridentini; la città fu assediata dai turchi ed egli, eludendo la vigilanza navale
