Capostipite di questa stirpe si vuole quel Raimondo Berengario, Conte di Barcellona, Signore di Nizza e Marchese di Provenza per investitura dell'Imperatore Federico I del 18 agosto 1162. Questo progenitore della famiglia Raimondo apparteneva alla Casa Reale dei Conti di Barcellona. Dalle genealogie di questa stirpe sovrana vediamo che Raimondo Berengario IV, detto il Giovane, Conte di Barcellona e di Provenza, e di Dolce Contessa di Provenza, divenne Conte di Barcellona nel 1131 e re d'Aragona nel 1137. Morì nel 1162. Aveva sposato Petronilla, figlia di Ramiro di Monaco, Re d'Aragona. In seguito a cospicue dominazioni e alle non meno cospicue alleanze matrimoniali, i R. della Provenza passarono nella Riviera, donde si diramarono in varie sedi della regione subalpina e della Sicilia e godettero inoltrre la nobiltà dei titoli di Duca di Gerona, Duca di Montblanch e Barone di Jerica. La diramazione siciliana ebbe ancor prima inizio dei "Vespri Siciliani"
