Antica ed assai nobile famiglia siciliana che vuolsi, per alcuni autori, oriunda da Genova, per altri da Napoli. In ogni modo essa ha vissuto nobilmente e splendidamente in Messina, in Palermo ed in altre città dell'Isola. L'origine di tal cognominizzazione, al dir di autorevoli genealogisti, andrebbe ricercata nel nome di una zona del Portogallo (Raia, Plan de Raia) al confine con l'Estremadura in Spagna, probabilmente luogo natio di un, oggi ignoto, capostipite. In ogni modo, tra i primi esponenti di rilievo, il Mugnos rammenta un Lodovico ed un Giorgio Raja, i quali seguirono Re Alfonso nella conquista del regno di Napoli. Ma, d'altronde, tal famiglia, nel dispiegarsi dei lustri, sempre è riuscita a produrre una serie di uomini che resero illustre il suo nome, nei pubblici impieghi, nelle professioni liberali ed ecclesiastiche e nel servizio militare.
