Nel XII secolo i Ramponi tennero due volte il consolato, poi non di rado l'anzianato, fino al 1369. Combatterono in Terra Santa, nella giornata di Fossalta, contro i Faentini nel 1170 e contro Nicolò marchese di Ferrara nel 1333. Ebbero due capitani generali dei Bolognesi nel 1296 e 1305, dettero podestà a Siena, a Padova ed a Milano. Scannabecco, di Rolando Ramponi, fu rettore della lega lombarda nel parlamento tenuto in Bologna nel 1226, e Tommasino fu uno degli arbitri a stabilir la pace tra Fiorentini e Bolognesi nel 1254. Furono di parte guelfa e vennero ripetutamente a conflitto con la parte avversaria.
