Molti scrittori e storici parlano della famiglia, una delle più antiche e celebri d'Italia. Ebbe parentela con le principali famiglie d'Italia; parlando di essa Papa Pio IV soleva dire non esservi sovrano e principe cristiano il quale non si dovesse ritenere onorato dell'alleanza e parentela contratta con essa.
