The family of the Rangoni counts of Reggio Emilia descends from the family of the Marquis Rangoni of Modena, and is a branch of it. Even before it moved to Reggio, the Rangoni family had given the city of Reggio two bishops and a governor of the city. Ugo, of Gherardo, of Ugo, and of Violante, of Ambrogio Cartari, of Ferrara, was nominated bishop and prince of Reggio by Pope Julius II in 1510, in age; and in very difficult times for that Church, hit by interdict, which was taken away from her in 1512. He enjoyed the trust of the popes Julius II, Leo X, Hadrian VI, Clement VII and Paul III, who entrusted him with important offices. he was governor of Rome, prolegate of the Holy See in Parma and Piacenza, tied in Germany and Spain to the emperor Charles V, then apostolic secretary, cubiculary of the pope.
