Ancienne et illustre famille de Pérouse, qui a pour géniteur Uberto, qui a vécu vers 970 et que certains ont voulu faire descendre des marquis du Monferrato tandis que divers documents prouveraient son origine saxonne. Cependant, les fils d'Umberto avaient la domination sur la terre de Fratta, aujourd'hui Umbertide, qui dans les documents de cette époque dans d'autres postérieurs apparaît toujours appelée : "Fracta filiorum Uberti". Entre les XIIe et XIIIe siècles, cette lignée se divise en quatre branches, dont le fils aîné reste à Pérouse et les autres s'installent à Orvieto, Gubbio et Raguse en Dalmatie. Parmi ceux-ci, la branche d'Orvieto et de Gubbio s'éteignit et celle de Raguse en 1100 se déplaça à Venise, donnant naissance à l'illustre famille Renier, à laquelle appartenait Paolo, avant-dernier doge de cette République.
