Antica famiglia, detta Manno, di Manno o de'Manno, che, per tradizione non infondata, provenne dalla Sicilia e che, passata poi in Sardegna, nella prima metà del secolo XV già teneva nobile stato in Sassari, dove il 31 agosto 1439, erano stati armati cavalieri Cristoforo e Leonardo ed il 1° ott. 1443, Bartolomeo. Nei primi anni del secolo XVI si trasferì in Alghero, ove alcuni membri della famiglia ebbero pubblici uffici. Antonio Rano, di Alghero, maggiore di fanteria nelle RR. Armate e capitano del porto di Alghero, ottenne dichiarazione di cavalierato e di nobiltà, con due distinti diplomi di cavalierato e di nobiltà, del 4 gennaio 1815, per sè e per i suoi figliuoli e discendenti maschi. Da lui e dalla nobile Maria Diaz, nacque Giuseppe che, con diploma del Re Carlo Alberto, in data 29 gennaio 1833, ottenne il titolo e la dignità di barone, trasmissibile ai discendenti maschi per
