Family moved from Tuscany to Bologna after the battle of Montaperti (1260). In the first half of the 1300s there is mention of a Domenico, Giovanni's father called Zenane. The son of these, Antonio, in 1407, is among the sixteen noble reformers, gonfalonier of justice and ambassador to various princes. Girolamo, son of Antonio and a Caccianemici, doctor of medicine and philosophy, is ascribed in the ranks of senators (1460) by Sante Bentivoglio, who names him his doctor, and is celebrated and sought after by princes and cardinals. Nicolò Sanuti designates him to his successor in the County of Porretta, in which Pope Sixtus IV confirms it in 1474. He was sent ambassador to Paolo II, the Visconti and the Gonzaga. In Ferrara is the wedding of Annibale II Bentivoglio, husband of woman Lucrezia d'Este. His sons Angelo and Battista, to be partisans of the Bentivoglio, go through difficult events.
