E' uno de' tipi più singolari di casata lombarda che rappresenta un cumulo di tradizioni formate da secoli di lavoro, di dure prove e di splendori. E' iscritta nella matricola d'Ottone Visconti. Il Corio vorrebbe far discendere i Casati da un Appollonio, vicario generale di Lotario II; un figlio di lui avrebbe fondato Casale o Casate, nella pieve di Missaglia. Sia o non sia attendibile quanto dice il Corio sta il fatto che i Casati dimoravano in Casatenuovo da tempo immemorabile, e due linee supestiti vi esercitano tuttora il patronato dell'abazia di S. Giustina, la cui fondazione risale alle metà del secolo XV. Fondarono anche nel 1102, per opera di prete Eriberto, l'abazia de' SS. Pietro e Paolo in Brugera, Caste e quella di S. Maria presso Poenzano, pure in Casate e quelle di S. Margherita in Casatevecchio, riunite poi nel 1451 a quelle di Santa Giustina. Il primo personaggio
