Antica e nobile famiglia toscana, con residenza in Firenze, nel quartiere San Giovanni, al Gonfalone Lion d'oro e Vaio, la quale fu ascritta al patriziato fiorentino e che diede due gonfalonieri e cinque priori alla Repubblica di Firenze. Stabilitasi in Ferrara ebbe alcuni gonfalonieri e vari personaggi si distinsero nelle lettere e nelle scienze. Fu insignita del titolo comitale dal Duca di Parma Ranuccio Farnese verso la metà del sec. XVII. Cosimo, infatti, chiese ed ottenne dalla Camera Parmense la giurisdizione di alcune ville che furono erette in feudo. Il Duca con lettera del 24 luglio 1648, ordinava al Magistrato della Camera di Parma che dovesse vendere a Cosimo di Ferrara la giurisdizione col mero e misto imperio delle ville di Panocchia, Asola e Corcognano, con obbligo nel compratore di riconoscere per sè e suoi discendenti maschi legittimi e naturali in infinito in feudo detti beni.
