La famiglia è originaria di Mantova. Nel 1209 si trapiantò in Bergamo donde, nel 1360 fu portata a Venezia da un Alvise, di Giovanni. Il di lui figlio Donato nel 1537 era Cavaliere e fu poi coi nobili Andrea Dolfin, Marco Sanudo ed Alvise Donà, nei reggimenti di Terrasanta. I fratelli Zanalvise e Antonio con Decreto del Consiglio dei Pregadi, 19 agosto 1603, furono creati cittadini veneziani coi loro discendenti. Nel 1622 Giammaria fu ammesso, con i discendenti, al Patriziato veneto e con Sovrana Risoluzione 1 dicembre 1817 fu riconfermata a questa famiglia l'antica nobiltà. Ottenne la famiglia, per un ramo stabilitosi a Ferrara, la nobiltà di Secondo Ordine di detta città. Napoleone nel 1842 fu ascritto poi alla Nobiltà di Primo Ordine. La famiglia è iscritta genericamente nell'Elenco Ufficiale Nobiliare Italiano del 1922, col titolo di Nobile di Ferrara (maschi e femmine) in persona dei Discendenti dal predetto Napoleone
