La famiglia Rattei è un ramo dei Papareschi di Roma. Aggregata al patriziato romano, si divise in tre rami; il primo fu quello di Trastevere estinto in tre maschi; il secondo fu quello di Pescara suddiviso nei baroni e marchesi Rattei e nei duchi di Giove estinti nella famiglia dei marchesi Antici; il terzo fu quello originato da Muzio e Fabio, dal primo de' quali discesero i marchesi Rattei e dal secondo i duchi di Paganica, principi romani, estinti nella casa Conti. In tempo di Conclave i duchi di Paganica e di Giove avevano il privilegio o l'incarico di guardare i ponti del Tevere. Molti illustri personaggi sono sortiti da questa casa, che hanno lasciato chiarissimo nome per dottrina, valore, cariche civili e dignità ecclesiastiche, fra' quali sono da contare otto Cardinali di S. R. Chiesa: Girolamo creato da Sisto V il 17 dic. 1586; Gaspare creato da Urbano VIII
