Famiglia antica, originaria di Voghera, dove fiorì a lungo con cariche e onori pubblici. Ne parlano l'Angius (I, 1148), il Giornale araldico (XXI, 307 e la Prove mauriziane)(N. 138). Ne scrisse i Cenni storici (Roma, 1903) il compianto conte Antonio Sangiuliani. Una declaratoria camerale del 16 giugno 1795 riconosceva la famiglia nel possesso della nobiltà, e, alcuni anni innanzi, Giovanni Battista (n. 1752), maggiore di fanteria (8 maggio 1786), aveva ottenuto un riconoscimento nobiliare dal tribunale di Milano (19 ottobre 1789). Nacque da lui Giuseppe Luigi Stefano (n. Voghera, 28 agosto 1787; dec. Voghera, 2 marzo 1856), che, cavaliere di giustizia dell'ordine mauriziano (14 maggio 1816), fu da re Carlo Alberto creato conte di Gualdana (tenuta presso Voghera) per Patenti 25 agosto 1835.
