De très longue date, pendant de nombreux siècles, les archevêques de Ravenne ont porté le noble titre de prince, dont l'origine, par une phrase bien fondée, découle du fait que parmi les anciens domaines dont jouissaient ces archevêques, il y avait aussi un juridiction dite de « simple et mixte empire » c'est-à-dire le droit de faire des lois et de les faire exécuter, et exercée sur vingt-six terres, châteaux et villages qui formaient ce qu'on appelait la « vicomté » dont le marché sarrasin, un endroit qui est maintenant dans la prov. de Forlì était la capitale. Le Viscontado, qui durait encore au XVIIIe siècle, fut d'abord mais supprimé par la Révolution française, et prit fin avec le motu proprio de Pie VII en 1816.
